Abstract
The diffusion and permeation process of t-butylbenzene were studied in unfilled NBR as a function of nitrile content and temperature. For filled NBR vulcanizates the influence of the type and volume fraction of iso-dimensional and plate like fillers was investigated. By increasing the nitrile content, both the diffusion and the permeation coefficients are seen to decrease on a gradient similar to that for HNBR elastomers. Platelet fillers are seen to have much higher barrier properties than spherical fillers. Micro-glass platelets with a volume fraction of 0.04 reduce the diffusive transport by ca. 28 %. The best barrier function obtained with pristine montmorillonite that was dispersed in the composite via a new technique based on latex compounding. For a volume fraction of 0.05 a 40 % reduction in the permeation rate and constant respectively was obtained.
