Abstract
The structure and properties of shape memory alloys such as nickel and titanium was studied. Nickel and titanium were melted in a graphite crucible, and the melt was poured in a mild steel cylindrical mold with a wall thickness of 2.54 cm. Single crystals were grown from the 50.9 cast material using the modified Bridgeman technique in an atmosphere of inert gas and were then homogenized in a vacuum furnace for 24 hours at 1000°C and quenched in water at ambient temperature. It was shown that the sensitivity of the higher nickel compositions to heat treatment allows for simple tailoring of properties and also indicated a higher sensitivity to solidification conditions.
