Abstract

Suction buckets are an interesting concept for multipod foundations for offshore wind turbines (OWT), especially in great water depths. The horizontal loads acting on the structure of the OWT are transferred to vertical loads on the opposing suction buckets with the tensile load case being decisive for the design of the foundation. The tensile bearing behaviour of suction buckets was investigated so far in physical model tests and finite element (FE) analysis, which are both expensive in time and costs. This paper describes the formulation of an analytical model and proposes a methodology for its calibration. The calibration is based on a parametric study conducted with an FE model, which is verified by the results of 1g model tests. The results indicate that the analytical model is able to represent the response of a suction bucket subjected to tensile loads, but the calibration of the elements cannot be entirely generalised yet.
