Abstract

A standing light wave was formed using the open 801 nm transition on a metastable argon. A spontaneous decay from the excited state leads with 72% to the ground state which is not detected and could be regarded as being absorbed. The optical pumping rate to the ground state gives the absorption rate. Tuning the laser exactly to a resonant state results in maximum optical pumping for a given laser intensity and zero light shift potential. A pure absorptive crystal is realized in these conditions.
