Abstract
The formation of a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of helium atoms in the metastable state 23S1 was examined. Results concerning the losses due to inelastic collisions show that the spin polarization does not inhibit the Penning ionization collisions between two metastable helium atoms by more than 3 orders of magnitude. A large scaling length resulting from very large rates of elastic collisions was observed.
