Abstract
Concretes with ternary clinker-efficient cements – Review of the mechanical performance and the durability taking into account the resulting CO2-emissions. In practice, Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) are readily used employed as to reduce the ecological footprint of cement and concrete production. However, as the availability of established SCMs such as granulated blast furnace slag or fly ash is dwindling and alternative SCMs such as calcined clays are not yet readily available, ternary or even quaternary blends, in which Portland cement clinker is mixed with granulated blast furnace slag or fly ash and limestone powder, are highly interesting approaches in cement optimization. The paper at hand describes and discusses the technical performance of concretes with ternary clinker-efficient cements, taking into account the resulting CO2-emissions. Based on a systematic literature review, data on concretes were extracted with regard to the composition as well as the mechanical properties, durability and resulting greenhouse gas emissions and a database with 94 data sets from various literature sources was compiled. Based on the literature data analyzed, the mechanical properties and durability could be systematically evaluated, taking into account the resulting CO2-emissions.
