Abstract

This study describes a method to concentrate a bacteria suspension by means of filtration and the measurement of ATP's content on the filter with the bioluminescence method afterwards. To check the surface's microbial contamination 111 samples of cattle carcasses and 71 samples of pig carcasses were taken in the abbatoir. With this method a correlation coefficient of r=0,93 for meat surfaces and of r=0,95 for beef surfaces could be achieved between investigations on plate count and the bioluminescence method. The limit of detection concerning aerobe colony forming units is 5×102CFU/cm2 for pork carcasses and 1x102CFU/cm2 for cattle carcasses.
