Abstract
Distribution and patch dynamics of the threatened shrub Myricaria germanica were studied in four braided sections of the Upper Isar River (Bavaria, Germany) between 1992 and 1996. Due to human impact (reservoirs, weirs, diversion structures) the sections studied differ in discharge, amount of sediment transported, and flood regime. Habitat preferences, seed dispersal, germination characteristics, and establishment of seedlings in the floodplain were also studied. M. germanica distribution and abundance reflect the different hydrological and geomorphological conditions. We found peak floods to be important for the survival of this species characteristic for braided rivers in the Alps.
