Abstract
Degree of humification in soils with organic carbon contents of 1-5% was determined with the differential thermal analysis. Wetting angles on fine fraction material (63-100 μm) increased with the degree of humification and indicate severe water repellency for some of the soils. Results showed a considerable decrease of the infiltration rate of water into dry soils for contact angles >90 degrees. The lower water retention characteristics of the hydrophobic soils decreased the hydraulic conductivity at values near field capacity compared with soils which are only slightly water repellent. A method is proposed, by which the impact of the contact angle on water retention curves can be described in terms of the reversible work of adheasion. The effect of contact angle on soil hydraulic properties support the hypothesis, that wettability is an important property in dry and wet soils as well.
