Abstract
An in-depth understanding of the damaging processes occurring in cement-bound building materials and the ongoing development of computing and measuring technology have resulted in a remarkable progress in terms of design, construction, and building supervision. The biggest obstacle to be overcome when implementing novel approaches to concrete construction is the practical feasibility, which can also be expressed by the notion of robustness. The application of modern, ultra-high performance concrete appears promising since these grades have a high strength and stiffness, which makes it possible to fabricate elements with high load-bearing capacities that are, at the same time, very slender, highly durable and fire-resistant if required. The use of new concretes and their combination with innovative power generation and thermal insulation systems appears highly promising.
