Abstract
The fundamental equations relating to magnetofluid dynamics are elucidated in terms of the pinch effect. Using the first law of thermodynamics the applicability of the bernoulli equation is analysed in terms of the phenomena to be described. Various considerations relating to erosive damage to the channel lining are discussed. In view of the problems involved in determining the magnetic field of channel-type induction furnaces quantitatively and the resultant difficulties in calculating a design free from the pinch effect, the aim of the present paper is to clarify a number of important aspects.
