Abstract
This paper presents the results of axial exhaust diffuser experiments using a twodimensional endoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system in order to visualize the complex unsteady diffuser flow, particularly its response onto the turbine operating conditions. In a series of experimental tests on a diffuser test rig which is equipped with a rotating spoke wheel as a turbulence generator, the swirl angle and the blade wakes are investigated in the diffuser flow. The laser light is lead into the test rig and the camera view is lead out of the test rig using an optical insert (endoscope). No additional windows must be installed in the outer casing. The endoscopic measurement set-up can even be applied for measurements in actual full-size exhaust diffusers. The PIV acquired data is needed for achieving a better understanding of the flow physics and for the validation of future computational fluid dynamics CFD calculations.
