Abstract

The first part of this report presents an analytical-iterative computational method for the most important performance characteristics of continuously variable chain drives which is applicable already in the conceptual and early design stage of such systems. Especially, it allows to predict the efficiency of power transmission in the variator itself. The mathematical model is based on a system of coupled differential equations. The elastic deformations are computed by means of the Finite Element method. An iterative process allows to calculate stationary points of operation. The second part gives examples how the method can be applied and demonstrates the excellent correlation with experimental data. Finally, it is used to explain the influence of different modes of deformation on performance.
