Abstract

Cryptic viruses consist of small isometric particles belonging to the family Partitiviridae, which includes three genera: Partitivirus, Alphacryptovirus, and Betacryptovirus. Cryptic viruses appear to cause no economically important diseases. Their genome consists of two monocistronic dsRNA molecules, 1-3 kbp in size, encoding an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and a coat protein. Cryptic viruses are not transmitted by grafting or mechanical inoculation, but are highly transmitted through seed and pollen. The concentration of the virus particles in the plant is usually low. Endeavors to define the evolutionary relationships and origins of these viruses are confined by the lack of genetic information. This overview provides an update of sequence information available and an insight into the phylogenetic relationships of plant cryptic viruses.
