Abstract

The regional economies of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) are strongly interlinked. Many firms based in Hong Kong have relocated their production facilities to locations in the PRD that offer lower production costs (front office/back factory model). One example is the electronics industry which is strong in exports of low-tech consumer electronics. The continuing success of this business model based on low-tech products can only be explained by a specific form of agile production organisation that helps to save time and cost. This paper provides initial evidence of the nature and outcomes of agile firm organisation in the spatial context of Hong Kong and the PRD. The research has been funded by a research grant from Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), priority programme "Megacities - Megachallenge: The Informal Dynamics of Global Change".
