Abstract
Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is a well-known method for detecting hazardous compounds in air. Detection limits in the very low ppb range and fast response times of just a few seconds make this technique more and more popular. Typical applications are the detection of chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial compounds, explosives and drugs. This paper describes the concept and preliminary results of a simple, planar aspiration condenser as a miniaturized ion mobility spectrometer. Compared to other aspiration condenser IMS our system has improved separation power due to ion-focusing before ion separation. First measurements of 1-Octanol, 2-Chlorophenol and Sarin, VX and S-Mustard simulants in air demonstrate the potential of this concept.
