Abstract
Since NR is a huge shift for the possibilities in mobile communication, more new emerging requirements for mobile bandwidth, delays and coverage are set. Unfortunately, the rollout of NR is still ongoing and not all necessary features are implemented yet. In this work we present an application layer measurement study in a major NSA-NR network in Germany and investigate whether NR is able to keep what it promises. We evaluate metrics of the application layer and compare them to NRs predecessor LTE. Our results show that NR is not always the better choice: In the current state of deployment, the layer 2 mechanism DRX can cause higher delays in NR than LTE. We also investigate the performance of HARQ, the queuing times and buffer sizes in downlink and uplink directions and the impact of NRs deployment strategy.
